Connect the Dot Generator — Turn Any Image Into a Custom Dot-to-Dot Puzzle

Upload a picture, mark where each line starts and ends, and watch it turn into a numbered dot-to-dot puzzle right in front of you. No templates, no guesswork — just your image, traced stroke by stroke, ready to export as a PNG or SVG.

What Is a Connect the Dot Generator?

A connect the dot generator takes any image and converts its outlines into a series of numbered dots, spaced evenly along each stroke. Kids join the dots in order to reveal the picture underneath — a small win that builds number recognition, pencil control, and patience, all at once. (For beginners who are still working on basic line tracing, start with our pre-writing line worksheets before moving to full dot-to-dot puzzles.) Most tools online only work with a fixed set of templates. This one works with whatever you upload.

How the Connect the Dot Maker Works

  1. Upload your image. Photos, clipart, scanned drawings — anything with clear outlines.
  2. It lands on your canvas, full size, ready to trace.
  3. Click Trace Stroke, then click Point A on a line.
  4. Click Point B at the other end of that same line.
  5. The tool reads the stroke between them and lays dots along its exact path, removing the original line.
  6. Repeat for every line — fins, bubbles, whatever’s in the image.
  7. Made a mistake? Undo Last Stroke pulls back one step, or Clear All starts fresh.
  8. Adjust the Properties panel — spacing, dot size, dot color, number color — until it looks right.
  9. Download your worksheet — as a plain puzzle, or with the solution included.

Every traced stroke shows up in a running list on the left, with a dot count next to it, so you always know exactly how far along you are.

Customize Every Puzzle

This is where the tool earns its keep. Nothing about the finished puzzle is locked in:

  • Spacing — control the gap between dots along each stroke. Wider for younger kids, tighter for a more detailed finish.
  • Overlay Width — adjust the thickness of the preview line shown while you’re tracing, so it’s easier to see exactly where Point A and Point B will land.
  • Dot Size — Small, Medium, or Large, depending on the age group and how much fine motor precision you want to demand.
  • Number Placement — toggle each traced stroke’s numbers to sit on the left or right side of the line, so labels stay clear of overlapping details in busy images.
  • Dot & Number Color — pick any color you like for both, not just a fixed set of presets, so the puzzle can match a worksheet theme, a festival color scheme, or simply print more clearly on your paper.

Nothing here is a fixed template setting — every stroke can carry its own spacing, dot size, color, and number placement if you want fine detail on a face and looser dots on a background line.

Download Puzzle or Download with Solution

Once your strokes are traced, you get two download options:

Download Puzzle gives you the blank, numbered dot-to-dot — ready for a kid to solve.

Download with Solution gives you the same worksheet plus a solved reference copy alongside it, handy for answer keys, classroom use, or just checking a child’s work without re-solving it yourself.

Both export as PNG, ready to print straight away.

Why Trace Your Own Image Instead of a Pre-Made Worksheet?

  • Any image works, not just what’s in someone else’s template pack
  • You control the dot count, spacing, color, and placement on every single stroke
  • Themes are unlimited — festivals, birthdays, favorite characters, a child’s own drawing
  • No repeats. Twenty kids in a class can each get a different puzzle from twenty different photos
  • Built-in answer key — download with solution whenever you need one

FAQs

Is the connect the dot generator free?
Yes — upload, trace, and download at no cost.

Can I upload my own image?
Yes, that’s the whole idea. Photos, clipart, or scanned drawings all work, as long as the lines are reasonably clear.

Do I need design skills to use this?
No. You’re just clicking a start point and an end point along each line — the tool handles the rest.

What file format does it export?
PNG. You can download the blank puzzle, or a version with the solution included.

Can I change the color of the dots and numbers?
Yes — pick any color for both, per stroke, so you can match a theme or just make the puzzle easier to read.

Can I choose which side the numbers appear on?
Yes — toggle each traced stroke’s numbers to the left or right of the line to keep them clear of overlapping details.

What age group is this good for?
Anywhere from preschool (wide dot spacing, simple images) through primary grade (tighter spacing, more detailed pictures).

How many dots can I add per stroke?
As many as the line needs — you control spacing, so short strokes might get 3–4 dots and longer ones can run into the dozens.
